Hearts of Gentleness

Some of my best life opportunities present themselves when I’m not seeking them. Thankfully I was paying attention to the universe when I was asked to do an art workshop at a shelter for the unhoused called, The Landing MN. At first, I was uncertain. I didn’t know how I might speak to the unhoused, the ill, the struggling veteran, the addicted, those that made serious mistakes in life and had paid for it, or to those who had just fallen between the cracks of our culture. But I did say yes and am so grateful that I did.

The guests (Guests are what the staff call those who seek community there) I met were full of energy and excitement to make art, others apprehensive but curious. Some joined in when they could trust how the process worked. I had been concerned how people would react when they moved around the table painting alongside and over each other’s work. I had worried how to connect, but they connected with me. I heard the people say, this is “f***ing cool. This is giving me life, man. I’m doing this with my family, and it’s meaningful to create something together.”

For your consideration.

As the paper began to fill with vibrant color, shapes and forms that had meaning only to those that created it, words appeared such as, love, peace, family, no hate. Hearts and gentleness came from the folks that experience the hardship of living on the streets daily. People would come and go from the table, but others joined in when they were encouraged by what they saw from their friends. People introduced themselves to me and thanked me for doing this art thing. I responded that they were bringing me joy and that is what happens when we share ourselves authentically, respectfully, and with love.

Several years ago, I posted a sketch shown here. At the time I was trying to show how important art was in my life. As I think about that hierarchy in this context, I sense some truth in the illustration. Not that art replaces the need for food, shelter, or medical care, but that creativity and its expression in the world is a foundational pillar. Creativity is embedded in all of us and when we share that together, we form community. A community to hold one another up, to solve problems and to remind us of all the beauty that is in the world.
