Wonder Filled Earth
St. Croix River Valley
Hudson, Wisconsin
After nearly six years living in the remote wilderness of the Cascade Mountains, we have found fresh inspiration in the St. Croix River Valley near a town called Hudson. Hudson is on the edge of western Wisconsin at the confluence of the Willow and St. Croix Rivers. The St. Croix River forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. While we are a couple of miles from the Willow River State Park and miles of forested hiking trails we are also not too far from Minneapolis/St. Paul and its art museums and theatres.
We are inspired by the dramatic seasonal changes. By the time we had arrived at our new studio home, winters first snowflakes began to appear and have continued ever since. We are in the beginning stages of a new project that chronicles the seasonal changes from snowy days to the rebirth of the earth in spring, and into the color palette of autumn. Adjusting to the northern light has been a challenge but has given way to beautiful sun rises that light up the grove of trees outside our studio. While the arrival of spring is a few weeks away, we are appreciating the subtle changes of light and the patterns of animal tracks in the snow. The earth is beautiful to look at, especially in its detail, but most people don’t see it. The planet is stunning, but it is also crazy. Recent days have proven that to be true. There are those that crave power in their destructive nature.
